SuperSlop - PreDevlog

This is another idea I’ve been going back and forth on for a while.

SuperSlop is a 2D bullet hell game heavily inspired by Vampire Survivors. Realistically, it leans pretty close to being a VS-style clone - with a few changes and a superhero theme layered on top. This would likely be built in Unity as that’s what I’m most comfortable with, but I’m also open to trying other engines if it feels like a good opportunity to learn.

You play as a wannabe superhero - a low-level vigilante who’s convinced they’re out to save the world. The problem is… they’re operating in a small, middle-of-nowhere town. There aren’t exactly a lot of world-ending threats to deal with (or at least, not at first).

Tone & Inspiration

  • A big influence here is Peacemaker (specifically the TV show). It’s less about the superhero action itself, and more about the tone - the dry humor, and how out of place everything feels in a quiet, rural back road kind of setting.

  • I want the game to lean into that contrast. Something exaggerated, a bit absurd, but not in a grotesque way. More campy than graphic, with violence that feels over-the-top rather than serious.

Gameplay & Structure

  • One of the bigger changes I’m considering is moving away from traditional menus.

  • Instead of a level select screen, I want a hub world that players can explore to find challenges and levels more organically.

  • The idea is to make the experience feel a bit more connected, rather than jumping in and out of menus.

Customization & Progression

  • Customization would also be tied into the hub: A small in-world “shop” where you can unlock cosmetic options

  • Basic character pieces (head, torso, legs) plus some accessories

  • Nothing too complex, just enough to give players some ownership over their character and of course reference some of my own favourite hero's

  • I am also playing with the idea of players being able to create their own hero names

Progression would stay fairly close to Vampire Survivors:

  • You gain abilities during runs and level them up as you go. Unlike Vampire Survivor's - instead of choosing a character with a specific ability you’d choose a main weapon, with the option to switch later on

  • Over time, you’d unlock other upgrades like increased health, damage boosts, shields and additional starting weapons (up to a max of three)

Visuals and Style

  • Visually, I’m aiming for something cartoony and stylized, probably in pixel art. The rough direction is something like Marvel vs. Capcom 2, but simpler and less detailed.

  • very bold colours though, basic animations and cartoonish amounts of blood / viscera

The goal is for this to be a game you can pick up and play without thinking too hard.

There would be objectives for each level, but nothing overly complex. I’ve thought about possibly adding a larger story to uncover over time, but I’m still on the fence about how much that really adds to the experience.

Right now, this is still very much an idea I’m evaluating but it’s one I keep coming back to.

I love Superhero slop content.
